Seiri or Sorting: Home – Go through all your personal
documents, tax, banking statements or whatever. Do the same thing as you did at
your working place. The only thing is that you do not need to get your spouse’s
permission to dispose unwanted or old documents, unless they are his.
You can do the same thing for your kitchen, bedroom and
other areas at your home. Go through all your items, not just your personal
documents. Get your family members to do the same thing too.
Why is sorting important? Here is the best-case scenario,
you go through all the old items at your home and you find an old and beautiful
painting. It is actually one of your grandmother’s old items. You think it is
not worth much. But your spouse advises you to check its worth.
So you visit a painting store and ask them to evaluate
the painting’s worth. The store owner tells you it is an old painting by
Rembrandt. Contrary to what you thought, it is worth over $100, 000.
Seiso or Cleanliness: Office – It is a psychological
thing. People are happier working in a cleaner environment. So clean your
working area as often as possible to maintain its cleanliness. You might be
happier to work at a cleaner place, producing higher quality work. For those with
asthma, a dusty place can affect them badly. Dust accumulates on the desk,
papers and other places if the working area is not cleaned for some time.
Why is cleaning important? Here is a scenario, a
potential new client walks into your office all of a sudden and sees the
condition of your working place. He gets a bad first impression, making him
think twice about having any business deal with your company or hiring your
company.
Seiso or Cleanliness: Home – It is part of a housewife’s
job to clean her home. If you are a housewife, you might most probably
understand how important cleanliness is. Do the same thing as you did at your
working place. Keep your home clean and tidy to the best of your ability.
Maybe, you can give some work to your family members if
you are too tired after days of hard work at your working place. Let them learn
the importance of cleanliness too.

boyfriend’s parents decide to visit you to check you out. It is a sudden visit
because your boyfriend has proposed marriage to you. You cannot do much about

Seiton or Organization: Office –Think about labeling and
indexing both your soft copy and hard copy files. Doing so will save a great
deal of time in the long run. You do not have to search for the file you want.
You will be able to find it quickly and easily just by glancing at it.
Do not forget to do the same thing for soft copy files,
more so if they are on the local area network. You may have co-workers thanking
you for your extra initiative. They do not have to go through all your LAN files
to find what they want.
Why is organization important? Here is a bad scenario; an
important customer audit is going on. Your customer wants a specific file from
you. You search and search to find the right file. It takes ages.
He gets impatient and says he will come back later to you
or asks to give it to him once you find it. Then he walks away from you. Your
